If artificial intelligence is really intelligent today

You’ve seen the demos – an AI writes a report, composes a song, translates a conversation, or solves a coding puzzle in seconds. It feels smart. But is that the same thing as intelligence, the sort humans mean when they talk about reasoning, understanding, creativity and judgment? This article gives you a practical, evidence-based take on where AI stands these days – what it can do, where it fails, what “intelligence” even means for machines, and what to watch next.

What people mean by “intelligent”

When we ask whether AI is intelligent, we consider at least three things:

Task performance

Accuracy on a benchmark (translation, classification, code generation).


General reasoning

Flexible problem solving across contexts.


Understanding and agency

Conscious comprehension, goals, self-awareness.

Modern AI excels at the first. It sometimes approximates the second in narrow domains. It does not satisfy criteria for the third. That gap is essential – high performance on tasks doesn’t imply comprehension or responsibility.

Where AI is convincingly “intelligent” today

You’ll find the strongest claims for intelligence where tasks are clearly defined and large amounts of data exist. Examples:

  1. Content generation and summarization – used in marketing, customer service, and coding assistance. McKinsey’s 2024 survey found 65% of organizations regularly using generative AI in at least one business function, and overall AI adoption jumped to 72% as organizations integrated AI into multiple functions. Those deployments already deliver measurable cost and revenue benefits,1
  2. Benchmark victories – in image classification, language understanding, and specific reasoning tests. Stanford’s AI Index notes that AI has surpassed humans on several benchmarks while still lagging on complex, multi-step tasks like competition-level mathematics and planning,
  3. Productivity boosts – in knowledge work where AI augments humans rather than replaces us, e.g. code completion, draft documents, data search and initial analysis. The AI Index and multiple studies report productivity gains when AI is used with appropriate oversight.

These are not vague claims. They are measured, repeatable improvements driven by models trained on enormous datasets and huge compute budgets. The training cost and resource demands are clear – training frontier models can cost tens to hundreds of millions of dollars worth of compute.2

Where AI is not intelligent – and why that matters

AI’s failures are not minor. They expose architectural and conceptual limits.

  1. Hallucinations and factual errors. Generative models produce fluent but sometimes false statements. Inaccuracy is the risk businesses most actively try to mitigate. McKinsey found inaccuracy to be a top concern and a cause of many negative outcomes when gen AI is misapplied,
  2. Lack of robust common-sense reasoning and planning. Despite benchmark wins, models struggle with long chains of reasoning, real-world planning and cause-and-effect understanding. Stanford’s AI index stresses that AI “beats humans on some tasks, but not on all.”,
  3. Dependence on scale and data. The best models exist because of massive compute, data, and engineering. That creates centralization of capability in a few organizations and a fragility – if the data or objectives are wrong, outputs can be misleading. OpenAI and other industry analyses show data center and compute demand exploding,3
  4. Opacity and governance gaps. Standardized, public, comparable safety evaluations are lacking. Developers use different responsible-AI benchmarks, which makes systematic comparison and oversight difficult. Stanford’s report highlights this as a core concern.

These limits mean you should treat current AI as powerful tools that need rules, oversight, and human supervision – not as independent experts or moral agents.

You can extract real business and personal value from AI – if you use it correctly.

Assume competence, verify correctness

Treat AI outputs as drafts, not final answers. Implement verification pipelines for facts and critical decisions. McKinsey’s data shows organizations already focus on mitigating inaccuracy.

Design human-in-the-loop workflows

Use AI for fast generation and humans for validation, especially where reputation, safety or legal risk is involved.

Prioritize data governance

High performers in McKinsey’s survey invested in data and model governance and involved legal and compliance early. That reduces downstream surprises.

Expect lifecycle cost

Frontline models require significant compute and maintenance. Training and running them is expensive. Plan for operational, not just licensing costs. Stanford’s data on training costs and OpenAI’s infrastructure analysis highlight this.

Follow regulation where you operate

If you’re in Europe, the AI Act sets concrete obligations and timelines – prepare for documentation, risk assessments and potentially audits.4

So, is AI intelligent? 

Some people call this artificial intelligence, but the reality is this technology will enhance us. So instead of artificial intelligence, I think we’ll augment our intelligence.

The practical question for you is not whether AI is conscious but whether it reliably improves decisions and outcomes in your context while meeting safety, governance and regulatory standards.
